And the winner of the 2007 Major Festival and Events
category is ... The 2007 Observer Boyne Tannum HookUp

And the winner of the 2007 Major Festival and Events category is The 2007 Observer Boyne Tannum HookUp!!!! Wow! For us as a committee to hear those words was nothing short of sensational! The 2007 Queensland Travel train Tourism awards for the Southern Reef, Gladstone Region and Capricorn region was held last Saturday (13th Oct) down at Agnes Water.
All of our committee went down to see if the HookUp was going to be successful and for a 5th time in its 12 year history it was and we nearly screamed and yahooed the place down! From its small beginnings 12 or 13 years ago with 5 or 600 entries and $15,000 in prizes in cash to what it is now with over $170,000 in prizes and cash and boasting a 3800 entry list is nothing short of awesome! Our closely knit team, all of which are volunteers, are very passionate about our wee event which has now developed into a monster.

Our team consisting of Jeff Amos, Ned, Andrea Phillips, Blair Mellor, Russ Tomlinson, Greg Klease, Pat Laws and myself, Dags, along with most of our support crew being Kris Beaumont, Jenny Branthwaite, Helen Mellor, Gary Phillips, Annette Tomlinson, and Leonie Klease were all down at Agnes Water to celebrate this momentous occasion.

It's at this point in time we'd like to thank all or sponsors who have helped fund the expansion of this event and also to those who turn up year after year to enter and enjoy the mateship and atmosphere of the Boyne Island and Tannum Sands hospitality. Without all these folk helping out, supporting, entering, sponsoring this event would not have evolved into the best family fishing event in Australia as it is today.
2004 AIM Business and Management Award of Excellence for the Gladstone Region
In early July 2004 Darryl (rear right) was nominated, on behalf of the Hookup team, for a Volunteer Management Award. So for the next five or six weeks a submission was written up and submitted to the judging committee of the 2004 AIM Business and Management Awards of Excellence for the Gladstone Region. Early in October four representatives, including Darryl and their wives went along to the Awards night which was held at the Gladstone Entertainment Centre where the Hookup, with Darryl representing, picked up the Volunteer Management Award for the region. Darryl's acceptance speech made note of all who are involved in this fantastic event from the sponsors to the competitors through to all the families of the committee who all put a huge slice of their lives aside to ensure that this event is always a success. Being recognised with in the business community is a very high honour and the committee of this event are very proud to accept this prestigious award. Prior to the 2004 event taking place the 2003 event was entered in the Capricorn, Gladstone and Southern Reef tourism Awards which took place in Gladstone. To enter these types of awards there is a great deal of work undertaken. Without the help of the Gladstone Area Promotion and Development Ltd helping out the goals would not have been achievable. The weekend prior to the 2004 event the awards were held at the University Grounds at the Gladstone Marina. Many dignitaries from all over the region, Rockhampton, Biloela, Gladstone, Calliope Shire, Miriam Vale Shire, and Banana Shire were there along with many tourism operators and their supporters. The event won the Best Festivals and Events category for the combined regions beating many others who had been nominated. Darryl was there to accept the award and paid respect to those who make up this fabulous committee, and how much this event means not only to the tourism industry but the business community in general.
